 I am running against Duke
Author: Richard Fontanesi for Congress
Date:   2002-02-19 20:08:10

For whatever it is worth, I would like to reach out to the visitors of this site and announce that I am the Libertarian candidate in 2002 for California's 50th congressional district (there has been a recent renumbering).

If any of you are not familiar with the Libertarian Party or have had brief exposure to it and something turned you off, I ask that you find out more about the party and the candidates. You can visit:

I will be running a fair and positive campaign. I do not hold it personally against "Duke" that he has political views different from my own. I respect his willingness to serve and his great contribution to the Navy.

I do not think that it serves the people for power to be so concentrated in Washington. A congressional district consists of about 640,000 people. How responsive do you think any congressman can be to their district? It would be much better to re-organize our governments so that societal issues can be addressed closer to the source. If one citizen has been harmed by the actions or negligence of other parties, it should be enough to prove the damage and fault to the local judiciary, rather than petition a congressman who is just one vote out of 435.

Since some of you seem concerned about Mr. Cunningham's pro-life position, let me inform you that I am pro-choice. Pro-life (anti-abortion) advocates claim that pro-choice advocates do not have respect for the life of the unborn child. For me, this is not true. The fact of the matter is, enforcement of anti-abortion laws creates a tyranny over women and doctors. The invasion of privacy required for enforcement was deemed a violation of individual rights by the Supreme Court in Roe v. Wade, and I agree with their decision. Besides, far more can be achieved in reducing the number of abortions in this country by creating an environment of economic freedom and opportunity and ending the present atmosphere of minimalizing personal responsibility.

Many of you seem motivated to do something about your representation in Congress. If you are disappointed with Mr. Cunningham but you have reservations about his democratic opponent, Del Stewart, then please consider helping me with my campaign or voting for me in November. I am a dark horse candidate, but if your conscience tells you that I am the best choice, I hope you will follow your conscience.

Thank you,

Richard Fontanesi
