Anti-Environment

[Earth in a garbage can] [acid rain]

My 2004 League of Conservation Voters rating is 9%. In 2004 I voted to:
  • allow snowmobiles in Yellowstone,
  • reducing funding for anti-pollution and environmental programs,
  • weakening environmental standards for logging on Forest Service lands,
  • for suspending requirements for clean-burning fuels,
  • for exempting refineries from public health laws,
  • against requiring public participation in federal environmental decisions,
  • against shielding scientists from politicization and interference by politicians and bureaucrats, and
  • for reducing current environmental and anti-pollution programs.
  • Finally, I voted for Bush’s national energy policy. If passed, it would have opened up Arctic National Wildlife Refuge (ANWR) to drilling, weakened the Clean Water Act, exempted oil companies from paying to drill on public lands, left weak fuel efficiency standards in place, shielded gasoline additive from lawsuits for contaminating drinking water, and exempt oil and gas companies from controlling storm water runoff.

Yeap. It was a busy year!

[dead dolphin] My proudest achievement is my support “Dolphin Death Bill,” HR 2823, allowing capture and killing of dolphins with tuna (55,000/year), yet still allow the so-called “dolphin safe” label. It became became law in 1997, You know it’s a lot cheaper to fish for tuna if tuna fishers don’t have to worry about separating the dolphins out from the tuna. Besides everything processed by a tuna packing plant, including dolphins, comes out tasting and looking like tuna. Yum yum! Remember, dead dolphins provide jobs (even if they’re jobs outside the U.S.). [Earth Island Journal, 10:4 (Fall 1995)

But I could fool the public. In one newsletter I stated as my sole environmental accomplishment was replenishing sand for local beaches (I hope nobody figures out dumping munitions-laden sand from off of San Diego Bay does nothing to protect the environment!).

The Humane Society says I’m a “menace to any furred, feathered, or finned creature.” Humbug—I say the only good animal is a dead animal.
